Lets say you have the situation when your new Windows 8 or 8.1 is not alone. The user will use it as they want, like from changing lock screen image, installing apps and uninstalling and many other undefined creepy things.
Start Screen is the only thing which comes first as you log in (yes, you can choose to go to Desktop first). So, there are chances "the kids" might scramble everything up there.
One more thing, what if you have reinstalled your Windows? If you have and arranged pretty much good apps over there from time-to-time why not consider backing it up? I have saved one copy of it on Dropbox and one on a local drive.
1. Start RUN dialog box by pressing WIN + R key.
2. Type "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows" and hit Enter. This opens Windows folder.
3. Copy two files "appsFolder.itemdata-ms" and "appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak" and save wherever you want, I suggest surely doing one for cloud.
Currently I don't have much apps, I am sure you does. |

Lets Start:
1. Start RUN dialog box by pressing WIN + R key.
2. Type "%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows" and hit Enter. This opens Windows folder.
3. Copy two files "appsFolder.itemdata-ms" and "appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak" and save wherever you want, I suggest surely doing one for cloud.
Now you are hassle free. If something happens to your Start screen you can restore it back by overwriting those files in less than a minute.
